We want to provide an intern a real-world learning opportunity to experience the stages of publishing, from development to publication, first-hand.

 

The Joint Commission Enterprise is a global driver of quality improvement and patient safety in health care and is nationally recognized for its achievements in the health care accreditation process. Joint Commission Resources, the global publishing, educational, and consulting affiliate of The Joint Commission Enterprise, is currently seeking an Editorial Intern to join our team in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, for the summer of 2025. This internship is ideal for a college student interested in gaining hands-on experience in publishing. The intern will have the opportunity to work on article writing assignments for any one of 3 department newsletters; composing alt text; creating image logs; updates to accreditation/certification standards manuals; other duties tbd. This is a great opportunity to become familiar with all facets of the editorial process.

 

 

Responsibilities

Intern will assist editorial staff with the following:

  • Editing copy in Word; checking and entering subject matter review comments and copyedits
  • Assisting with changes to standards manuals
  • Working in Adobe InCopy to make proofreading corrections to digital newsletters
  • Assisting with content updates for publications, including print and digital books
  • Preparing manuscripts for production
  • Assisting with art, resource, and permissions logs
  • Writing short summary pieces for digital newsletters
  • Performing quality control, research, and fact-checking for publications
  • Attending and participating in editorial team meetings and huddles
  • Supporting communication/marketing efforts about current department offerings
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

We are looking to hire a detail-oriented intern who meets the following requirements:

  • Currently enrolled student majoring in English, rhetoric, journalism, publishing, or communications
  • Entering their junior or senior year of college preferred
  • Has maintained at least a B average in their major
  • Has an interest in book/newsletter/web publishing and/or health care publishing
  • Designated days when the department is in office. Currently that is Wednesday/Thursday, may change to Monday/Tuesday.
  • Is available 20 hours a week—8 hours in person two days each week and 4 additional hours of remote work
  • Interested candidates should attach a brief letter of interest (200 words or less) to the application
