Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY

Provides on-site consultation, education, and technical assistance to U.S. and international healthcare organizations to assist organizations in improving patient care. May be requested to serve as surveyor for international accreditation surveys.  Works with JCR Central Office staff to generate leads, develop proposals, and pursue consultation and custom education engagements. 

 

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Provide on-site consultation, off-site consultation (telephonically, electronically or via �Ask the Expert� subscription series), and custom education to U.S. and international healthcare organizations or other clients, emphasizing practical approaches in the application of Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and/or Joint Commission International standards as well as technical assistance in general healthcare operations improvement. May be requested to serve as a surveyor for international accreditation surveys. 
     
  2. Works with consulting or custom education clients to identify the unique needs of the organization and tailor the technical assistance engagements to those needs.  Adjusts the scope of the consultation or educational offering as needed. Develops educational materials for use in field education, custom education, Continuous Survey Readiness educational conferences, �Ask the Expert� conferences, or client educational updates when requested. 
     
  3. Generates potential client leads and assists in the development and presentation of proposals for service. Maintains and builds client relationships through ongoing communications (e.g. periodic telephone or e-mail communications).   Identifies client needs for follow-up services and pursues follow-on sales opportunities. 
     
  4. Assists in the promotion of JCR through participation as a speaker at state, regional, and national conferences or JCR seminars and conferences as requested. Participants in relationship marketing activities for JCR, including representing JCR at national conventions and writing articles for publication or for JCR journals or newsletters.

  5. Prepares written consultation reports based on information obtained from the on-site consultation.  Utilizes JCR report format and adheres to JCR style.  Works with JCR editor to revise reports as necessary.
     
  6. Participates in JCR annual consultant conference and other JCR educational programs to maintain current knowledge of Joint Commission standards and JCR services.   Attends relevant education programs and keeps abreast of current Joint Commission policies, standards, and survey process as well as general healthcare trends.
     
  7. Participates in the design, testing, evaluation, and redesign of JCR�s consulting and education products and services.
     
  8. Submits, and reviews when requested, appropriate examples to JCR good practices database. 
     
  9. Participates in the training and precepting of new consultants when requested.
     
  10. Obtains feedback from JCR clients regarding the quality of services and participates in the evaluation and revision of JCR services.
     
  11. Participates on JCR work teams and in other performances improvement activities as appropriate.
     
  12. When serving in the role of consultation team leader, coordinates agendas and travel planning arrangements for other team members and oversees the quality and completeness of the final consultation report.  

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED 

  1. The level of knowledge and experience equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of a degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine and a clinical residency program.  
     
  2. Ten or more years of experience in health care, with seven to ten years of progressively more responsible experience in healthcare management, such as serving as chief of staff or in a physician executive role. Experience in a health care consulting role is highly desirable.
     
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of JCAHO and/or JCI standards and survey process, quality improvement, and/or patient safety and risk management required. 

  4. Excellent communication skills as exhibited through professional involvement in leadership roles, teaching, consulting, or relevant publications.
     
  5. The written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively present information and ideas in proposals, position papers, and to make presentations.
     
  6. Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheet software and presentation software required. Intermittent consultants must have own laptop computer available for on-site consultation and custom education programs. 
     
  7. Approximately seventy-five (75) percent travel required.
     
  8. Ability to adapt to diverse cultures and sometimes challenging travel conditions. 
     
  9. Fluency in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese or Arabic preferred.
     

PHYSICAL ABILITIES 

  1. Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
     
  2. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders.
     
  3. Must be able to travel 100% of work time.
