Directs projects related to the development of Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and certification standards and survey process.  Provides direction and leadership to work groups, task forces, and committees participating in the development of JCI accreditation and certification standards, and the accompanying survey process guides. Manages the process for interpretation of standards for all JCI programs.


Represents JCI in relationships with international accreditation bodies and government agencies such as Ministries of Health, WHO, ISQua, and alike. Serves as a technical and content resource to staff, the Board, and advisory groups as it relates to JCI accreditation and certification standards.



  1. Manages and contributes to the development and revisions of JCI standards, including the International Patient Safety Goals and other standard-related products.


  1. Assist in the establishment, management, and use of external and internal advisory groups that provide guidance in the creation and maintenance of international standards.


  1. Provides support for establishing the JCI standards database and its maintenance thereafter.


  1. Works collaboratively with The Joint Commission Enterprise staff, JCI clinical team, operations, and quality department in matters pertaining to JCI standards and survey process.


  1. Manages the process for updating the website for JCI Standards Interpretations, and the dissemination/communication of interpretations to all JCI field and Central Office staff, and JCI-accredited organizations.


  1. Participate in the development and presentation of educational programs to internal and external audiences. Serves as faculty for JCI surveyor and consultant education/training on standards.


  1. Organizes and supports the testing and evaluation of standards in international organizations and the testing of the survey process.


  1. Assists with development and maintenance of the accreditation policies and procedures for the JCI accreditation and certification programs.


  1. Represents the Department of Standards Development and Interpretation in processes to design and/or redesign products and services based in alignment with organizational goals and objectives.


  1. Serves as a technical and content resource for the JCI accreditation and certification programs in the preparation of position papers and reports for the Board, Senior Management, and other groups.


  1. Monitors current projects to ensure that all work conducted is completed within established guidelines and in a highly professional manner.




General Qualifications:

  1. The level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of a Master's degree.  Master's degree in healthcare field with 5+ years of progressively increasing responsibility in healthcare and/or clinical settings OR a Bachelor's degree with 7-10 years of progressively increasing responsiblilty in the healthcare and/or clinical settings.  

  2. Experience should include progressive management and strong project leadership abilities.  Contemporary knowledge of heathcare operations and current trends related to quality and safety of cares issues in various healthcare environments.  Experience with international healthcare setting a plus.

  3. Three or more years of demonstrated progressive expertise in the management of committees, work groups, etc.

Specific Qualifications and Capabilities: 

  1. Knowledge of The Joint Commission accreditation and/or JCI initiatives (e.g., performance measurement, patient safety and adverse event reporting, and public policy white pages).  Experience with The Joint Commission, The Joint Commission International or other similar accreditation organizations preferred.  Experience may include but not limited to being a survey coordinator, participating in survey preparation/activity, and implementation of accreditation standards.

  2. Experience participating in the development, revision, and interpretation of national or international standards and/or the development, revision, and application of national and international standards such as for the World Health Organization and governmental agencies, preferred. 

  3. Experience in reviewing and evaluating research and journal publications as references for new and revised standards. 

  4. Able and willing to travel internationally, as needed for standards-related projects and activities.
  5. Able to work collaboratively and effectively with expert panels, advisory councils, and other international consensus building bodies in healthcare.
  6. Strong team player who understands the "big picture" and able to makes decisions that benefits JCI the whole organization.

  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as cultural sensativity and interpersonal skills.

  8. Excellent relationship building and business development skills. 

  9. Ability to work independently, including strong computer skills and proficiency with word processing, graphic presentations, power point presentations, email communications, and spreadsheet development. 

  10. Reliability and dependability in meeting deadlines and project management. 

  11. Knowledge and experience in using and building standards database, highly desirable. 

  12. Approximately 15 - 25% travel for special projects, standards development work and speaking engagements.
