  • Overview

    Under general supervision of the Field Director, reviews assigned functions in Pathology and Clinical Laboratory Program throughout the United States and in some foreign countries.  Provides general evaluation services, education, and consultation consistent with applicable Joint Commission standards, policies, and protocols.  Determines the degree of compliance with applicable standards.


    1. Conducts a thorough and credible evaluation of assigned services that meet laboratory accreditation criteria. Plans, reviews and apportions review time so that all review requirements are addressed thoroughly.  Reviews and evaluates pre-survey information; researches, collects, organizes, and interprets information from multiple sources.  Interviews Leadership, physicians and staff to determine level of compliance with standards.  Analyzes documents, such as performance data, and use of clinical practice guidelines, to assess the level of compliance with Joint Commission standards, evidence of performance improvement, safety culture and quality of care.
    1. Using established review protocols:
    1. Analyzes written self-descriptive program information.
    2. Participates in and/or conducts all required conferences and interviews; analyzes all data submitted by the organization.
    3. Documents all recommendations, providing adequate indication of non-compliance in Survey Technology.
    4. Submits review findings in a complete and accurate manner to in Survey Technology.
    5. Interprets and explains the intent of the standards to the organization’s personnel and Leadership. Consults with the organization during review concerning non-compliance, opportunities for improvement in Leadership, safety culture, and remedial action required. Recommends publications and other resources that clarify standards and/or demonstrates compliance with standards
    1. Maintains current knowledge of Joint Commission laboratory standards over which they have review responsibility. Demonstrates knowledge of current federal regulations pertinent to the laboratory services evaluated.




    Pathologist, Board Certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology.


    General Knowledge and Experience

    1. Five years of recent clinical experience, including at least two years in management, preferably laboratory oversite as laboratory “CLIA” director, and two years demonstrated responsibility for oversight, decision-making, management, and improvement in clinical pathology and histopathology and cytology.
    2. Demonstrated knowledge of pathology industry including trends, performance measurement, and improvement.
    3. Demonstrated knowledge of compliance requirements related to CLIA’88.
    4. Currently practicing in area of Clinical Pathology and/or Anatomic Pathology.

    Analytical Skills

    1. Ability to research, collect, organize, interpret, and communicate information for multiple sources (i.e., documentation, observation, interviews) to assess the degree of compliance with Joint Commission standards.
    2. Ability to critically review and analyze performance measurement data.
    3. Ability to objectively assess organization performance.
    4. Ability to differentiate and assess the adequacy of alternative/innovative approaches to standards compliance, consistent with survey policy and protocols.
    5. Ability to analyze and synthesize survey findings to provide conclusions, recommendations, and educational opportunities


    Provide availability for assignments based on FTE status and note- -   Individual needs to be available for work assignments on dates submitted as required or per policy

    Intermittent FTE:

    Availability needs to be submitted a minimum of 4 months in advance.

    Submit availability as required to accommodate a minimum of  6 survey days/year

    Submit 2 consecutive days of availability every other month to accommodate 6 survey days/year.   

    Part time FTE:

    Submit three weeks for.48 or four weeks for .70 employees per availability policy.

    Full Time FTE:

    Submit all weeks available in the months per availability policy.
