The Senior Associate Director plans, manages and reports on all activities associated with the daily operations and coordination of the Standards Interpretation Group Engineering Department. Formulates and initiates strategies to improve the Engineering Department responsiveness and accountability to accredited customers and the public. Systematically evaluates departmental performance, surveyor variability, and standards effectiveness and leads the efforts to improve the same. Provides direction and leadership to surveyors addressing interpretation of standards and survey processes. Participates as a consultant in the development and revision of standards and survey process and in support of ongoing accreditation services and special projects. Serves as faculty for surveyor and field education programs and represents the Joint Commission at speaking engagements and in media interviews. Provides leadership and oversight to educational needs identified and offerings provided to the division through in-services/classes, conference calls, FR newsletter, and the annual training conference.


The Senior Associate Director also provides updates and recommendations to Joint Commission leadership regarding emerging trends that impact the healthcare environment. Participates in meetings and forums with federal agencies, national code promulgation associations and other agencies in coordination with the DC Office.    


  • Ability to manage, plan, organize and coordinate the activities of a diverse staff and multiple projects
  • Demonstrated strong operational, analytical, presentation, and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals at various levels both inside and outside of the organization, sometimes in sensitive situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to function in a high stress, rapidly changing, and high visibility environment.
  • Direct experience working with the public preferred.
  • A health care professional with a healthcare facilities management and a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in engineering and master’s degree in management, engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in three accreditation fields with a minimum of five years in a hospital facilities area and a minimum of five years in an executive or management role. 
  • Maintains certification in at least one of the following: Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM); Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS); Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP); Certified Energy Manager (CEM); National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) membership  
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission policies, standards, survey, and accreditation processes. 
  • Strong computer skills preferred, including demonstrated ability in working with databases, technology solutions, graphics and word processing.
